Well, I am one of the new
ones. New to Inflammatory Breast Cancer that is. Prior to December of
2001 I didn't even know such a thing exsisted. I was on a cruise in the
Caribbean
the week before Thanksgiving. At the beginning of the cruise I noticed
a thickening on the left side of my left breast. Strange, as I had just
had my yearly mammogram which was clean in May 2001. As the week went
by, the breast got reddish in color, hot to the touch, nipple inverted
and
sharp pains occurred. By now I was convinced I had a major infection
of some kind. So I went immediately to the emergency room after I got
off
the plane.
It was misdiagnosed as mastitis and I was given antibiotics. I went
to my regular OB/GYN when the antibiotics didn't work and thank God,
he
took one look and recognized it for what it is. He immediately rushed
me to
a breast surgeon
for a needle biopsy and ultrasound followed up by a tissue biopsy and
yes it was imflammatory. They immediately installed a mediport and
Praise God
the CT scan and bone scan turned out negative. However there seemed
to be activity in the lymph nodes under the left arm and in the neck
(hence
the stage IV diagnosis). My Oncologist and Surgeon say this is still
survivable and I pray they are right. I have had two rounds of chemo,
4 treatments
each. Adriamycin, Cytoxin and Taxotere was the chemo and now I am faced
with mastectomy and radiation.
Will this never end??? I have 21, 16 and 4 year old daughters. I worry
more about the 4 year old as my current husband is not the nurturing
type. My prayer is that he softens and God gives me enough years to at
least
she her reach adulthood. If I can get that I would give up any chance
to see grandchildren, weddings, etc. Anyone out there, please, please
pray
for me and my darling daughter Ashtyn.
Thanks, Donna
